The barren ground of this region, west of Caraz is perfect for a challenging Downhill and a unique prospect to close observation of the most stunning living thing in the area: the Puya Raimondi. A Bromeliaceae that grows in few places living up to 100 years. The panorama over more than 140km of the Cordillera Blanca rewards the long and dusty climb. You won’t know which to admire more, the Puyas or the snow peaks.

Transfer from Caraz via Pueblo Libre, 2 hours driving will take us by dirt road to the Winchus Pass 4,200m. Then a short Uphill of +60m to get the very top of the Cordillera Negra. We visit the Forest of Puyas and go along the ridge for 4km to initiate the Downhill. Series of switchbacks go across villages almost perched on the steep slopes. The mountains around seems to be green and yellow patches like an eiderdown as local farmers grow potatoes and maize. After 2 hrs. we arrived at the city of Huata from where we appreciated imposing snowed Santa Cruz. Rest and finally a route Cross Country until the paved road that leads to the Cañon del Pato to end with a short Uphill until Caraz. They are 45 km of route for one 6 hrs.
